Itchy skin

I have very itchy skin and moisturizers do not seem to work. My doctor recently recommended light therapy. Does this work?

Your doctor is a jackass. Light therapy is sometimes used to treat itching due to excess bilirubin in your skin; this is commonly done in newborn infants. In adults if you do not have high bilirubin in your skin, than light therapy will not work. In fact, light therapy causes heat, which can intensify the itch. Moreover, you need many sessions of light therapy and this is not cheap. Light therapy is never the first choice for treatment of itching in adults.

The best advice is go to a doctor who can find out why you have the itch- two conditions that you want ruled out are dermatitis (Eczema) and fungus. In the meantime, apply a cool dressing and get some over the counter hydrocortisone lotion over the counter. If it is not a fungus, hydrocortisone works great and immediately - change your doctor please.
