Sound waves for kidney stones

I have kidney stones and my doctor says I may benefit from sound waves. What do you think?

Sound waves, which are also known as extracorporeal lithotripsy, are sometimes used to break up kidney stones. The vibrations induced from the sound waves break the stones into tiny fragments that are then passed into the urine. The procedure is very uncomfortable and most patients are not able to tolerate it. Most people need some type of sedation because the breakage of the stones can be excruciating. In addition the technique is only used for small stones and does not work in everyone.

Lithotripsy is also an expensive technique with no guarantee it will work- best advice, do not go for it or at least get an opinion from a patient who has undergone this therapy. Personally, as a surgeon, i think this is a BS technique of treating kidney stones- or put another way- another means of ripping money from the poor patient.
