Does Acupuncture work for menstrual cramps and pain?

Acupuncture for dysmenorrhea

There are millions of young women who suffer from dysmenorrhea (painful periods). This condition usually presents with crampy lower abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, thighs and groin. It may also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, anxiety and make life miserable. Asides from taking NSAIDs, there is not much one can do. For years, the people in alternative health care have been advocating acupuncture for dysmenorrhea. The question is, "does it work?”

A look at the latest studies indicates that acupuncture may provide some pain relief in at least 40 percent of women with dysmenorrhea. Some studies showed that acupuncture was much better than Chinese herbs and in fact even improved the quality of life.

However, there is a downside to acupuncture. It does not work in all women. In addition, one needs to go for several sessions each month and each session can cost anywhere from $75-$150. Moreover, the pain relief is only temporary and one needs to undergo ongoing acupuncture for long-term pain relief. If money is no objective, then this is great. However, if money is an object then you are stuck with ibuprofen and sucking up the pain.
