Ringing in the ears

Can tinnitus be caused by medications?

Sure, medications often cause or may worsen tinnitus. The longer you use a medication, the more intense will be your tinnitus. Fortunately, when the drug is discontinued, tinnitus stops. Common medications that cause tinnitus include the following:

- Prolonged use of certain antibiotics like gentamycin, bleomycin and erythromycin

- Certain cancer medications like vincristine

- Use of water pills

- Quinine to treat malaria and muscle cramps

- Long tem use of aspirin

If you develop tinnitus after starting a medication, speak to your doctor before you discontinue the drug. The reason for this is that in some cases, tinnitus may spontaneously disappear and you may not need to change your medications.
