Does bipolar disorder run in families?

Yes, bipolar disorder is known to run in families. If one family member has bipolar disorder then chances are that some family members may also be affected. Not all siblings in the family will develop bipolar disease even if both parents have bipolar.

Unfortunately, even if it is known that there is a genetic linkage, nothing can be done. Bipolar disease cannot be prevented nor can it be cured.  Of all the mental health disorders, bipolar takes an enormous toll on the individual and everyone around him/her. In simple terms-these individuals f..k up everything and everyone around them.
